  • Material: A carbon steel blind flange is commonly used in general utility and hydrocarbon systems, while a stainless steel flange would be required in corrosive applications like chemical processing.

  1. System Termination: They are used to permanently cap the end of a pipe run that is not currently connected to another component or vessel.

  2. Pressure Testing: Before a new pipeline is commissioned, a blind flange is installed at the termination points to seal the system. This allows the line to be safely pressurized with water (hydrostatic testing) or air (pneumatic testing) to verify the integrity of all welds and pipe fittings.

  • Bolting Procedure: Proper bolt tensioning is vital. Uneven tensioning can lead to gasket failure or flange distortion under load.

  • Adherence to Standards: Whether it is an ASME flange specification or a DIN flange specification, the blind flange must match the rating (Class/PN) of the mating flange. A PN16 carbon steel blind flange cannot be safely bolted to a PN40 line.
